Job Description

Produce Shift Lead

 

 

Purpose:  To provide excellent customer service and stock product; to prioritize and facilitate shift routines and oversee operations in the Produce Department; to ensure the department is neat, clean, fully stocked and fronted; to coordinate AM set-up activities and PM priorities; including receiving, stocking, cleaning and prepping; to act as the go-to person for department or store needs in the absence of a manager. 

 

Status:  Full or Part-time. Reports to a Produce Manager or Assistant Manager

 

Pay Level: lll

 

Responsibilities: 

 

Customer Service

  • Model exceptional customer service.
  • Guide customers to product locations and provide product information.
  • Answer calls for Produce; taking messages when necessary.
  • Accurately record and communicate special orders.
  • Report customer suggestions appropriately to buyer or manager.
  • Keep aisles clear and retail areas safe for customers.
  • Handle customer complaints.

 

Department Maintenance

  • Prioritize tasks to ensure work efficiency and a clean, well-stocked department.
  • Ensure displays are fronted, straightened and hydrated.
  • Ensure retail and work areas are in clean and orderly; meeting Health Department rules and store safety standards.
  • Respond to emergencies and potential safety hazards.
  • Notify Produce Manager of product or equipment problems.
  • Ensure cross merchandising displays are well maintained.
  • Maintain daily cleaning schedules.

 

Receiving and Stocking

  • Coordinate receiving to ensure proper receiving and stocking; including leading receiving or transferring receiving responsibilities to a co-receiver as necessary
  • Help check in and sign for deliveries and follow receiving procedures.
  • Ensure fully stocked displays and shelves, following merchandising procedures.
  • Rotate product and adjust displays (based upon new products and out-of-stocks).
  • Send back returns and work with the Buyer to ensure poor quality items are credited.

 

Shift Leadership

  • Conduct an AM walkthrough of the department; working with Receivers and Buyers to set priorities.
  • Promote produce by facilitating sampling with BeRM (what does this stand for?) and Replenishment Buyer.
  • Communicate priorities to staff.  
  • Prioritize and delegate tasks to ensure efficiency.
  • Ensure observance of store policies and safety regulations.
  • Work with MODs to ensure store maintenance and deal with issues that arise.
  • Assist in the training and development of Produce staff as directed by managers.
  • Identify and communicate personnel issues to Produce Manager.
  • Respond to 'service team' calls.
  • Respond to promotional or scanning/POS problems.
  • Facilitate shift routines; including breaks, training attendance and sending staff home early.
  • Call in staff in short-staffing situations.
  • Help communicate updates, procedures, and policies to P.M. staff.
  • Assist in development of training materials for counter staff.
  • Assist in covering closing shifts when staffing issues arise.
  • Serve as store Floor Warden in case of emergency.
  • Compose a shift report when directed.
  • Check for product recalls during PM Shifts and follow recall procedure.

 

Other duties as assigned

  • Participate, as directed, in quarterly inventory counts.
  • Perform other tasks as assigned by Managers.
  • Attend meetings and trainings as directed.
  • Cover shifts vacated due to illness/absence.

 

Qualifications:

 

Essential

  • Excellent communication skills

  • English proficiency

 

Functional

  • Demonstrated ability to work with customers and co-workers from various cultural backgrounds
  • Ability to stand, bend, stoop, reach, squat and walk for extended periods of time per shift.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs. repeatedly
  • Bend and lift loads, not to exceed 50 pounds. Push and pull carts weighing up to 100 pounds.
  • Environmental exposure to extreme temperatures (coolers, ovens, freezer, outdoors, etc.)
  • Ability to freely access all areas of the store including offices, sales floor,back stock areas and walk-in coolers and freezers
  • Ability to move or handle merchandise throughout the store generally weighing up to 50 pounds
  • Repetitive use of hands for grasping, pushing, pulling and fine mainpulation

 

Preferred

  • Excellent leadership skills.
  • Ability to organize, prioritize, and delegate
  • Accuracy and attention to detail
  • Experience in Produce a plus
  • Computer proficiency
  • Open availability
  • Multi-lingual a plus
  • Demonstrated ability to work with customers and co-workers from various cultural backgrounds
